GKB-Bergbau GmbH is the legal successor to the previous holding company ÖIAG-Bergbauholding GmbH (ÖBAG). The company has been assigned responsibility for carrying out the legally stipulated measures required to close down, secure and monitor the disused mines in Voitsberg-Köflach, Wies-Eibiswald, Wolfsberg and Bad Bleiberg as well as smaller external mining sites, encompassing on balance a total mining area of over 100 km2. Finally, the company is also responsible for the implementation of measures involving the closure and recultivation of former lignite mining activities in the Voitsberg district, shut down in 2004.
The associated companies were sold off and other restructuring measures carried out in 2004 during the privatisation of the former ÖBAG. ÖBAG was transformed into a limited company (GmbH) and amalgamated with GKB-Bergbau GmbH in a downstream merger. |
